Fatigue of internal combustion engine valves

Development of a set of input files for Fino and wasora plus Bash scripts to analyze fatigue lifetime of both an admission an exhaust valves of an internal combustion engine and elaboration of a technical report with the main results. The scripts and the report had to be modifiable by the user to be applicable to other products as well. The inclusion of support for non-trivial displacement boundary conditions (i.e. fixation to a conic surface) had to be added to Fino during the course of the project.


Computational implementation of the mathematics behind material fractomechanics

Guidance on mathematical methods and computational tools to perform fractomechanical analysis of admission and exhaust valves for internal combustion engines. From the Seamplex’ point of view, the project consisted on a consulting task regarding the computation of volume integrals of deformation energy over CAE grids and analysis of time-dependent variables. Both computations were performed using wasora.

CAEplex: finite elements in the cloud

CAEplex is the next-generation solution for performing finite element analysis. It is a web-based interface (front-end) that provides an advanced yet easy-to-use GUI for running FEM in the cloud directly from the browser. It uses Gmsh and Fino as the meshing and solving back-ends, respectively. Project history is tracked using Git and collaboration is possible by means of access permissions.


Environmentally-assisted fatigue of dissimilar joints in nuclear power plant pipes

Detailed analysis of fatigue under environmentally-assisted conditions of welds over dissimilar materials in pipes of systems directly related to the safety of a heavy-water nuclear power plant. Differential thermal expansion effects over operational and incidental transients had to be considered, including the occurrence of design-basis earthquakes. Stress linearization according to ASME VIII, fatigue analysis according to ASME III and NRC/EPRI computation of water-assisted fatigue factors had to be performed. All in all 24 dissimilar joints were analyzed. Transient heat conduction and quasi-static elasticity was solved with Fino. Fatigue assessment was performed using wasora. All the input files and scripts used to obtain the final results were tracked with Git, and each of the 24 final reports contained the hash of the corresponding calculation repository for full traceability.


Fino: a free finite-element solver

Fino is a free and open source tool that uses the finite-element method to solve steady-state thermo-mechanical problems, or steady or transient heat conduction problems, or modal analysis problems. It is particularly designed to handle complex dependence of material properties (i.e. temperature-dependent properties). It can also perform parametric or optimization runs. The domain over which the problem is solved should be a grid generated by Gmsh. The material properties and boundary conditions may involve arbitrary dependence of space associated to physical entities defined in the mesh.


Computation of stresses in butterfly valves due to incorrect installation

A parametric study of mechanical stresses due to failure to mount flange butterfly valves on the main pipe line as a function of the mis-installation angle was performed. Valves of nominal diameter of 2, 4 & 6 inches were studied. Fino was used as the finite-element solver of the elastic problem. Results were presented in a detailed document reporting the parametric results and the main conclusions.


milonga: a free nuclear reactor core analysis code

Milonga is a free core-level neutronic code that solves the steady-state multigroup neutron transport equation using either the diffusion approximation, or the discrete ordinates method over unstructured grids (although simple structured grids can also be used) based on either a finite-volumes, or a finite-elements discretization scheme. It works on top of the wasora framework, which provides means to parse and understand a high-level plain-text input file containing algebraic expressions, data for function interpolation, differential equations and output instructions amongst other facilities. Therefore, any mathematical computation which can be done by wasora—i.e. parametric calculations, multidimensional optimization, function interpolation and integration, etc.—can be combined with the facilities that milonga provides to solve the neutron diffusion equation.


Fatigue assessment in nuclear piping

Chapter of a full book of case studies aimed at students. The main case is based on analysis of fatigue in the pipes of a nuclear power plant after many years of operation. The chapter pays especial attention to the differences between what engineers are taught at college and what they (we) have to face in real life. A list of tips like trying to image mechanical situations, avoiding black boxes and explaining results even before obtain them are given. There are links to repositories with example cases using Fino and wasora. The full book will be available at NAFEMS by mid 2019.


Web interface for a quality control device to mark defective automotive parts

A feasibility study of building a web-based interface for analyzing data from quality control processes in the cloud to see where mechanical parts had manufacturing defects was conducted. A prototype of a WebGL interface where the part was shown in a regular browser and a series of heat-maps showed the statistics of thousands of measurements made at the assembly line was built.

Pipelined FEA tool for hip implants

A pipeline for unattended (i.e. non-GUI) computation of mechanical stresses in tailor-made hip implants was needed. Seamplex designed and implemented a tool to perform the required finite-element analysis using Fino in a totally automated way. The path to three CAD files and a set of input data (e.g. the relative location of the CADs in the assembly, the location and magnitude of the load, the mechanical properties of the materials, etc.) was provided in a JSON file. The tool, a main Bash script that called Python and M4 for other particular tasks following the UNIX philosophy, assembles the parts into a single CAD using OpenCASCADE (through the Gmsh wrapper), cuts a slice of the top sphere to create a plane surface to hold the load, meshes the assembly, solves the linear elastic problem and creates a JSON file with the main results and a detailed VTK file with the displacement and stress distribution. A full set of test and documentation was included, including building instructionss, Software Requirement Specifications and Software Design Specifications.


Web-based interface for textile braid design software running in the cloud

A rewrite of a desktop-based tool for designing textile braids was performed. Using WebGL, X3DOM, PHP and JSON a new web-interface was obtained and the code was set up to run on the cloud instead of on the user’s computer.


Feasibility of replacing the body of a car water pump with a plastic resin

Thermal, mechanical and fatigue analysis was performed to an assembly composed of the shaft, bearings and body of a water pump for refrigeration of an internal combustion engine. Taking into account temperature-dependent properties, these studies were performed first for the original body of aluminum but also for a new plastic-resin material. Parametric studies for uncertainties in the properties of the new material were conducted. A full report was prepared.
