Development of a set of input files for Fino and wasora plus Bash scripts to analyze fatigue lifetime of both an admission an exhaust valves of an internal combustion engine and elaboration of a technical report with the main results. The scripts and the report had to be modifiable by the user to be applicable to other products as well. The inclusion of support for non-trivial displacement boundary conditions (i.e. fixation to a conic surface) had to be added to Fino during the course of the project.


Environmentally-assisted fatigue of dissimilar joints in nuclear power plant pipes

Detailed analysis of fatigue under environmentally-assisted conditions of welds over dissimilar materials in pipes of systems directly related to the safety of a heavy-water nuclear power plant. Differential thermal expansion effects over operational and incidental transients had to be considered, including the occurrence of design-basis earthquakes. Stress linearization according to ASME VIII, fatigue analysis according to ASME III and NRC/EPRI computation of water-assisted fatigue factors had to be performed. All in all 24 dissimilar joints were analyzed. Transient heat conduction and quasi-static elasticity was solved with Fino. Fatigue assessment was performed using wasora. All the input files and scripts used to obtain the final results were tracked with Git, and each of the 24 final reports contained the hash of the corresponding calculation repository for full traceability.


Computation of stresses in butterfly valves due to incorrect installation

A parametric study of mechanical stresses due to failure to mount flange butterfly valves on the main pipe line as a function of the mis-installation angle was performed. Valves of nominal diameter of 2, 4 & 6 inches were studied. Fino was used as the finite-element solver of the elastic problem. Results were presented in a detailed document reporting the parametric results and the main conclusions.


Feasibility of replacing the body of a car water pump with a plastic resin

Thermal, mechanical and fatigue analysis was performed to an assembly composed of the shaft, bearings and body of a water pump for refrigeration of an internal combustion engine. Taking into account temperature-dependent properties, these studies were performed first for the original body of aluminum but also for a new plastic-resin material. Parametric studies for uncertainties in the properties of the new material were conducted. A full report was prepared.
